Elijah Root, for half a century chief engineer of the Champlain Transportation Co., on account of failing health resigned that position.

At his home (No. 10 Broad St.) died Elder Lewis W. Pierce, ordained elder in the Presbyterian church in 1855; special customs inspector under Oliver D. Peabody 1851-1853.
